Why Fish Taltson?
Let's Go Fishing:
Your days will start with a hearty breakfast served up by our chef in the main lodge. That’s followed by a morning of fishing, a midday shore lunch, and then more fishing after lunch. We’ll return to the lodge each evening for a delicious supper, hot showers and some “R&R.”
The gear:
You’ll be fishing aboard 16-foot Lund fishing boats fully equipped with comfortable swivel seats, computerized sonars and electric trolling motors to hold you over the fish. We supply quality tackle: heavy enough to land the giants, yet light enough provide plenty of excitement with “average” fish.
What You’ll Be Catching
The Northern Pike:
Our waters feature many weedy, shallow bays that are premium pike habitat. Pike in the 8- to 12-pound range are typical, with most anglers running into quite a few over 15 pounds. Many summer weeks can offer up trophy pike well over 20 pounds. Our current record is 32 pounds, while fly-rodders have taken pike up to 25 pounds. In many areas, anglers can spot pike laying out in the clear water and then stalk them like freshwater bonefish. There’s little more exciting than watching a huge Northern Pike turn and attack a topwater bait, enticingly retrieved spoon or streamer fly.
The Lake Trout:
Another prime target, lakers will hug shorelines and shallow waters during the early and late weeks of the summer. They do retreat into deeper waters as the lake begins to warm up, but are easily taken via some techniques we have pioneered: no downriggers, no wire lines – just conventional casting and spinning gear and light line. Lakers in the 5- to 15-pound range are encountered most often, but 20-pound-plus fish are taken daily, with 30- to even 40-pounders not uncommon. In 1999, the largest landed was an outsize 48 pounds.
Catch and Release
The fish in Taltson grow very big and old, so we release all of them, except for some smaller ones we keep for our shore lunches. If you’d like to have a trophy mounted, we’ll be glad to assist you in taking photos and measurements for your replica mount. You are more than welcome to hug your trophy fish for pictures prior to release.
Jigs and Flies
Vertical jigging is deadly on lake trout. We position and hold our boats over schools of fish, and you just drop down a jig or spoon and hang on. We also troll large custom lures for trophy-size fish.
Northern Pike are stalked with a quiet electric motor in weeds, along shorelines and in protected bays. Casting surface lures and flies brings heart-stopping strikes on top. Jigs, spoons and bright streamers work incredibly well. You'll often see pike charge your fly or lure.
Fish Finders
Our state of the art high resolution GPS Fish Finders allow us to stay on the fish each and every fishing day thorughout our fishing season. When fishing Lake Trout, depth and water temperature pay a huge part in locating the fish. We have GPS locations for hundreds of hot spots that yield incredible fishing for monster pike and lake trout.
Photography
Stunning photo opportunities present themselves at every turn along our 73-mile fishery. Moose, bear, fox, wolves, lynxs and other wildlife live in the surrounding boreal forest. Lake otters, beaver and muskrats frolic in the water. Eagles nest in the pristine wilderness close to the lodge. Migrating ducks and geese wing their way along the lake. Loons and woodpeckers abound. Whisky Jacks will land on your hand making for great shots. Remember to visit our old trapper's cabin for even more photo opportunities.
